Los Senderos Colon

Distance: 3.4 miles, 5.5 km

Elevation gain: 754 ft, 230 m.

Los Senderos Colon is a wonderful collection of trails primarily set up to be used as mountain biking trails, however hikers are welcomed too. The trails are plentiful and well laid out. There is a cost to use the trails of 4,000 colones (roughly $8), and hikers will need to be aware of bicycle traffic, but the well maintained trails and

beautiful scenery make this a great destination for a hike or bike ride. The trails are a bit technical for bikers, so I would recommend a good mountain bike, helmet, and some practice before attempting these trails on bike. Most of the trials are one way. For more details including hours, check out their Facebook page.

The trails start in a beautiful coffee plantation in a river valley. A few bridges will take you over the river and before starting the climb up the ridge.

As the trail climbs, there are a number of switchbacks, and lovely views, and if you're lucky, you might see some Capuchin monkeys playing in the trees! Once you've climbed to the top of the ridge there is a trail that follows the ridge and accesses more loops down either side. The trails are well signed, and there are maps posted in key locations, so getting lost shouldn't be a concern.

The return trail is the most south-easterly trail. Descending the trail to exit the park provides some beautiful views of the mountains and windmills above Ciudad Colon. Bicyclists may be riding very fast on this stretch, so be aware.
